Affecting Coriolis - Part 1 - Get started

Scripture (Coriolis core book) suggests to begin a game, a group starts with a ship, a group purpose, and then build characters. This encourages if not requires the players and GM to meet under a “Session0.” I’ve been planning - especially with Coriolis - on doing a Session0 to start a group that plans to meet regularly. In that session, we’d go through the list set up in Chapter 2 of the Coriolis Core Book

  1. Pick a group concept.
  2. Pick your spaceship.
  3. Pick your group talent.
  4. Pick your patron.
  5. Pick your nemesis.
  6. Create Characters (which, in turn, has its own order of operations)

One thing I’d like to provide for my players is introductory media to present some of the background and atmosphere of the Coriolis universe. I will do a lot of that live at Session0, but maybe have the media to get the imagination going before 0. So I hope to put together a short PDF with an intro to the lore, art, and look at the mechanics. I'd also like to do a video that conveys the mood of how I'd like the universe to feel. How the characters interact with it is where the game comes alive. However, Coriolis has a mood, a palette, a flavour, a texture. I won't want to dictate whether the characters respond to Coriolis like Arthur Dent or like Ellen Ripley. I feel like the setting is one thing, but the characters and their interactions with each other abd the setting determines whether the story is comedy, tragedy, drama, or surreal. The dynamics around the table is where the story grows. I present the setting. As a group, we make the story.

I’d also set up a brief encounter or brief starter adventure as we close our Session0. The reason why we play games is to play games. So I’d like to at least start the first scene of an adventure so that players can get a taste of the universe that their character inhabits.
